Tin

Elements main page

Tin, Sn, 50, is a cheap, soft metal, pretty average in looks. The chemical symbol Sn comes from latin for tin, which is "stannum"

Tin is unusal because it's atom has many different isotopes, meaning it is stable with different numbers of neutrons. Tin can have 62, 64, 65, 66, 67, 68, 69, 70, 72, or 74 neutrons, 70 being most common, making up about 33% of all natural tin.

Tin has been used for quite some time, especially in alloys with copper known as bronze, after which the "bronze age" was named. Bronze is a golden colored metal, which is stronger than either copper or tin alone, and was used to make weapons and armor before steel making was well known.

Tin is also the main component in an alloy called pewter, which is 85% tin, and was used for dishes before ceramics such as china became more common.
